Centreville, VA
The community of Centreville, VA, is located in Fairfax County, 20 miles west of Washington, D.C. It covers a land area of about 12 square miles, home to roughly 72,000 people, many of whom commute into the District.
The area was originally called Newgate during the colonial period. Many local names came from England, including a tavern called the London Prison and a nearby stream named the River Thames. Civil War battles were fought around Centreville, including the First and Second Battles of Manassas and the Battle of Chantilly. Today, Centreville consists mainly of shopping areas and large housing developments. The town maintains several schools, churches and recreation centers, serving primarily as a bedroom community.
