Herndon, VA
With a population of close to 25,000 people, Herndon, VA, ranks as the third largest town in Fairfax County. This quiet community covers a land area of 4.2 square miles, located a relatively short drive from the nation’s capital.
The town was named in 1858 for Commander William Lewis Herndon, soon becoming a hub for dairy farming and a local vacation destination. The Washington & Old Dominion Railway boosted the town’s development, now a hiking and biking trail. The Herndon Depot Museum is a popular attraction as the site of a Civil War skirmish on St. Patrick’s Day in 1863. The town also boasts the Herndon Centennial Golf Course and Herndon ArtSpace.
